I've used Plotaroute for several years to plan trail runs in the Shawangunks (NY) very successfully.
Since the update I can't route through much of Mohonk Preserve. Routes that worked a few weeks ago now fail, or only work if I draw them manually.

I am guessing the cause is the new OpenStreetMap data combined with how the router treats access tags. The affected ways are tagged foot=permit (some also access=permit), because the Preserve requires a day pass or membership. Example:

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/233694622 (Trapps Trail, highway=track, foot=permit, bicycle=permit, horse=permit, motor_vehicle=no)

Those tags have been in OSM for about a year, so I assume they weren't in the previous data pull. I can't tell whether the data pull or the engine change is responsible, only that the problem started with the update.

I count roughly 26 Mohonk ways with foot=permit, including main carriage roads (Undercliff, Overcliff, Duck Pond Road, Glory Hill Road, Lenape Lane, Oakwood Drive). Together they cut off a lot of the Preserve. Nearby ways with no access tags still route fine.

The tagging is legitimate. A pass really is required (day pass or annual membership) so I don't think the OSM data is wrong. For comparison, GPX Studio routes these ways when its "allow private roads" option is switched on.

Could you consider adding a similar option, such as an "allow permit/private access" toggle in the route planner? A user who holds a pass could then choose to route through these ways. If that's not feasible, treating foot=permit as routable for foot and run profiles would also solve it for me.

I'm happy to provide more details if it would help. Not being able to route in Mohonk Preserve will likely mean I have to use a different tool, and I really want to stay with PlotARoute.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the detailed report.

I'm sorry the recent update had a negative impact on how you use Plotaroute, and I hope that we will be able to sort it out.

I just asked a dev to check it out, and they agree with your assessment that this seems to come from the updated OSM data, rather than the route engine.

The dev team will look into both options to solve this, and I'll update this topic as soon as I receive any news on this.

    Kind regards,
    Julien

Update: after looking into it, the issue does come from the new version of the route engine and not the OSM data. We will need to look into an additional option to "allow private paths" in the future, but for now we will apply a change to treat the tag "permit" as "foot=yes". This change will require an update over the weekend. I'll check on Monday if plotting on Mohonk Preserve is possible again.

    Hi,

The devs informed me this morning that the update failed during the weekend, so they launched it again today.

I'll check tomorrow and will write again.

    Kind regards,
    Julien

    Hi,

The update was successful. I just checked, and it looks fine now.

Could you please give it another go?

    Kind regards,
    Julien

Brilliant, thanks for letting me know. :)

Until we add an option to include private/permit paths, this change should be beneficial for everyone.
