Probably the best gravel in the South of the Lake District.

South Lakes Grit is a 103km, multi-surface ride, Brevet Populaire (BP) with 2 AAA. A 10 kph minimum speed sounds easy, yet since 40% is off-road the ride presents a proper challenge. Leaving Hawkshead, initially climbing above Windermere, you turn Northwest towards the first control in Great Langdale. Climbing Blea Tarn out of Langdale is steep (20%) yet on tarmac, followed by a descent into Little Langdale then across to Grizedale, at 280m the highest point of the route. Flowing fast gravel in Grizedale Forest leads to the south end of Coniston Water. Here a stiff little climb (15%) leads onto Rusland and a descent to Greenodd crossing the Leven estuary to enter the loop around the Cartmel peninsula. Long and draggy Bigland Hill (15%) is challenging followed by the descent to a free control in Cartmel (shop, cafes and pubs). Heading North again the route traverses Claife Heights with panoramas of Windermere and the Eastern Fells before the roll into the finish.

Intended for experienced riders with some off road experience on a suitable machine: 32mm or bigger tyres with a tread pattern and powerful brakes - a cyclo-cross or 'gravel' type of bike? You need to be self-sufficient for spares or repairs, bike shops in Grizedale and nearby Ulverston and Ambleside.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
