Nationaal Landschap Winterswijk
Het landschap in dit gebied heeft zich kunnen ontwikkelen door de relatieve afzondering van de rest van Nederland. Dit kon door grote moerassen. Het huidige landschap is halfopen met afwisselend kleine percelen en grote essen met daarnaast bosjes, lanen, houtwallen en af en toe hoogveen. Door de essen is het reliëf opvallend. Ook kenmerkend zijn de meanderende beken in smalle dalen. Ten slotte is de bebouwing vervlochten in het landschap: oude boerderijen, gehuchten en grotere nederzettingen.
Opvallend is de grote, open steengroeve bij Ratum. Afgezien van Zuid-Limburg is dit de enige plaats in Nederland waar geologische afzettingen uit het Tertiair zo dicht aan het oppervlakte komen.
Deze route neemt je mee door het prachtige coullissenlandschap van het Nationaal Landschap Winterswijk. Je fietst achtereenvolgens door de buurtschappen Meddo, Huppel, Ratum, Kotten en Woold. Kenmerkend zijn de glooiende weilanden, houtwallen, bosgebieden en statige scholtenboerderijen. In het begin fiets je langs het recreatiemeer ’t Hilgelo met de Sevinkmolen. Nabij knooppunt 10 bevinden zich Wijngaard Hesselink en de mooie bosgebieden Dottinkraede en het Tenkinkbos. Bij knooppunt 22 kun je een kijkje nemen bij de Winterswijkse Steengroeve, rechts de groeve waarin nog kalk wordt gewonnen, links de oude groeve die tegenwoordig beschermd natuurgebied is. Verderop kun je nabij knooppunt 29 een wijngaard bezoeken, is er net voor knooppunt 31 een kaasboerderij en net na knooppunt 28 een geitenkaasboerderij. Tenslotte fiets je door het fraaie Bekendelle-bos terug naar Winterswijk.
