MG- NW Winds V Hilly Dash
This is a variation on another short hilly dash, ( of 27 miles via Burwardsley, which doesn’t take in the extra loop after Pheasent in, as this one does. Therefore means this route is much harder and 6 miles more and breaches 2000' and putting me on my limit for 2 large bottles.
This one also takes a few different lanes Aimed at no cafe and short sharp hills.
There is great protection from NW winds.
The bit from No Mans heath to Tilston, although into wind, is in fact down hill for most of it, as is the lane back into Tattenhall, so the wind is not an issue.
The route deliberately has the start via Old Ma's to provide a decent warm up before Burwardsley 7 the toughest bit. It is a great route.
The only real headwind issue is down Frog lane to finish.
I have routed it that way to avoid crossing the A41 4 times, as before, so it flows a bit better and makes a nice round 30 miles just. If it started to feel a bit tough at Tilston, I can always head straight back through Carden Park into Tattenhall, which would only save a couple of miles.
The route would work fairly well for most winds really, but ideally NW, as the exposed bits are with wind. The bits in to wind have high hedgerows, just the little bit out of Tattenhall is a bit tough, but even that 1 mile isn’t bad. The other NW legs are up hill in high hedge row cover. There are some fast down hill bits
Not a route for bad weather as a few lanes are really small and get well wet, although non of these are known to flood, from my experience. This route does avoid some of the known really mucky narrow lanes though hence, the bit that crosses the A41 at Hampton heath, after ‘Pod house’ which is not ideal, but does avoid the tiny lane that short cuts this bit ( Hampton house lane) however, that little lane is often a real mess in winter or after any heavy rain, although down hill in this direction.
This one put on Garmin Aug 23 7 has the potential to be a real ball breaker of short sharp hills.
this route can also be altered slightly in places to change it up bit, like using Bickerton high on the way out instead of the parallel easier road. the bits above Burwardsley obviously depend on a dry spell as the lanes are high and can get mucky, although I have never known them to be that bad. certainly good on the Whyte
