Hi Rowan - I'm not sure about that one. Nobody has mentioned that before. It's something I think you'd need to ask Garmin or raise with other Garmin users as you've already done.
Can anyone else offer any advice on this?
John
Hi John,
Sorry to revive a long dormant post, but I have a quick question about this. Firstly, I'm loving the system and the turn warnings are very useful. My question though is about the format they take. I'm not really sure of the terminology and if there is a difference between course points and waypoints, but I notice that the turn warnings are staying on my garmin edge 820 even after I have finished following that particular course. I suspect that they are then stacking up in the thing's memory and causing it to freeze eventually. Is that consistent with what you expected, or would you expect the warnings to only appear if I was actually following that particular course? Is there a way to make it so that happens? I have also been asking about this on the Garmin forums by the way, you can see the conversation at https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?357287-BUG-Garmin-Edge-820-Total-Crash-Brick-Shut-off-while-Navigating-a-Course&p=938626#post938626 if you want more context.
Thanks,
Rowan
Thanks John, I saw the reply and your questions so that's great news. Cheers.
Hi Justin - I think I spotted your post on the Garmin forum about this too and someone from Garmin has been answering questions I posted there. It seems that the standard limit is actually 200 coursepoints, at least for the most common Garmin Edge models. I was under the impresison that it was 100 but it's possible that it was 100 at some point and that newer versions of firmware have since increased this. I'll get our site changed to use 200 as a default limit but in the meantime you should be able to safely select 200 as the Course Point Limit when downloading and hopefully this will give you enough directions for longish routes. If not, you can always use our Manage Directions feature to delete and/or combine directions.
This is great thanks, although I am getting warnings advising that including turn warnings counts towards the course point limit, which severely restricts its use on a longer ride (I have already had to cut down from nearly 200 to 100 before I even include turn warnings). I do not recall it ever being an issue when I used the same feature on BRT, so not sure if they had this feature programmed in differently or maybe my device, Edge 510, can handle more than 100 course points? I have tried Googling, but cannot se the limit for my device. Not sure if anyone else knows?
Thanks will be using this on my next ride

I'm very pleased to say that we have just implemented this. Read more on our Turn Warnings news post.
Hi I'm a bit late to this conversation but am pleased to see its already on the to do list. Advance warning for a turn, particularly on routes that are new would help prevent overshooting! Only been using plotaroute for a couple of weeks but the lack of advance warning for turns is the only niggle I have with it.
Sorry for the delay with launching this new feature - it's on the way and should be implemented very soon now.
I vote for this as well.
love the the site keep up the good work
thanks Bob
Me too. It was the main reason I used to use BikeRouteToaster before it stopped working.
Add me to the list of those that would appreciate the addition of this feature.
Thanks for the addtional info. I can see this is a popular request. We're in the middle of working on some of other changes at the moment but bear with us and we'll get this done as soon as possible - it will be next in the queue!
Hi, I also liked this feature in BikeRouteToaster (BRT) and would love to see it added to Plotaroute. I've tried emulating it manually by inserting waypoints (coursepoints, trackpoints?), but with mixed results. BRT's version would let the user specify the number of metres in advance for the warning to appear and also to specify the text of the warning.
I really appreciate the suite of features in Plotaroute.
Regards,
Steven
Thanks for your input Peter. Would you mind expanding on that a bit more? If we have additional coursepoints at say 50m before each turn, would that be sufficient to know that the turn was in 50m? Or are you looking for proximity warnings at various intervals as you approach a turn?
My interest in this feature is not so much the warning in advance of junctions, but rather to include the course points in the tcx file so that the GPS device can indicate the distance to the various course points along the course e.g. for Audax controls. Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion. This has come up before and is something we want to do but we can certainly move it up the priority list. We're working on another new feature for the site at present but once that is complete I think we should be able to look at this next.
Is it important to be able to specify exactly how many metres before the turn that the warning marker is placed? If not, how many metres before would you say was a good setting?
It would also also be useful if someone can let me have an example of a TCX file where turn warnings have been added. Jim - I'll email you with an address to send this too if you dont mind.
By coincidience, I was just looking for this feature too.
I have found this feature in BikeRouteToaster (and a paid feature of Ride with GPSI) really useful. When you upload the .tcx file to the Garmin it allows you to specify adding warning markers a set number of metres before the turn - this is really useful.
Any chance of incorporating it into Plotaroute?
Thanks
Jim
