You might find the Trace a Route feature helpful when making sure that routes you intend to join together start and end in the same place - this allows you to add one or more routes to the background map.

When building collections, where routes are intended to be sequential, it is necessary to know that each new route starts where the previous when ends.  It is important to see this on the screen and when printed.  You need to see the gaps and make corrections.  The corrections will be in the segments, the notes/descriptions, and the route names.
