    On Garmin Connect, it's possible to create routes containing course points of specific types. These types are announced as part of turn-by-turn navigation (e.g. "water in 1 mile") and appear with corresponding iconography on the "Up Next" navigation screen on compatible Garmin devices. They're therefore very useful in course planning and navigation.

    On plotaroute.com, you can add symbols to directions. While plotaroute's symbol list is very different from (and much larger than) Garmin's list of course point types, they're actually partially compatible. When a route is exported from this website to FIT, certain symbols will be converted to a similar Garmin course point type, other symbols will be converted to a different type, and others still won't be converted at all. This reference route is a guide to what symbols are handled and how they appear on Garmin devices.

The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

    When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.
