    De fietsroute Fietsen langs forten rond Abcoude laat je uitgebreid kennismaken met bijzondere en historische plekken in en aan de rand van de Ronde Venen. Op bijzondere plekken in en aan de rand van De Ronde Venen vinden we Fort aan de Drecht, Fort Uithoorn, Fort Waver-Amstel, Fort aan de Winkel, Fort bij Abcoude, Fort bij Nigtevecht en Fort in de Botshol, allemaal onderdeel van de Stelling van Amsterdam. Deze stelling, een verdedigingskring rondom de hoofdstad, is 135 kilometer lang, bevat 42 forten en is aangelegd tussen 1880 en 1914. Vlakbij, in de provincie Utrecht, ligt Fort Nieuwersluis. Dit fort is onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie die werd aangelegd om Holland te beschermen. Van Muiden tot aan de Biesbosch kon land onder water worden gezet zodat de vijand niet kon oprukken.

    De verzameling forten, kastelen en kazematten van de Stelling zijn onderdeel van UNESCO Werelderfgoed Hollandse Waterlinies
