    Operatie Market Garden was bedoeld om een versneld einde te maken aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De regio Arnhem en het Rijk van Nijmegen speelden daarin een belangrijke rol. Op 17 september begon daar “De slag om Arnhem”. Operatie Market Garden was de grootste luchtlandingsoperatie uit de geschiedenis. 10.000 para’s, 1000 DC3 Skytrains, 500 Horsa Gliders, 500 Jeeps, 300 stuks geschut en 1500 gevechtsvliegtuigen werden ingezet om de strijd te beginnen.

    Op diverse plekken in het landschap liggen de dropzones verspreid: dropzone Y ligt op de zuid-Ginkel bij Ede tussen knooppunt 64 en 84 aan de Wijde Veldweg. Tussen knooppunten 84 en 82 liggen Dropzone X en Z in Renkum. Richting Wolfheze vind je dropzone S en in Oosterbeek ligt dropzone L. In de Betuwe bij Driel ligt dropzone K waar de Polen landden.

    Deze fietsroute is 56 kilometer lang en voert je door het hele gebied. Je kunt overal opstappen. Wij zijn begonnen op de Ginkels heide bij Ede waar de Slag om Arnhem begon. In Ede vindt hier jaarlijks een grote herdenking plaats op de 3e zaterdag in september. Honderden para’s worden gedropt bij het monument van de gevallenen. Een indrukwekkend schouwspel.
