    Start the walk outside Cavendish Pavillion. Cross the bridge to the opposite side of the river, then turn left. Follow the path upstream through a field.

    Once you pass through the gate at the other end of the field, take the path uphill which leads away from the river. This path will bring you out onto a paved track.

    Continue to follow the track in the upstream direction just a short distance.


    One the right-hand side you will see a signpost that indicates the route to the Valley of Desolation and Simon’s Seat. Follow the indicated path through the gate and into the field.

    Once in the field, cross it diagonally to the left, sticking close to the house. This will lead to a gate with a wide track beyond it.

    Follow the track as it skirts alongside woodland to the left and pastures to the right.
    Eventually you will pass a pond on your right.

    Shortly after the pond, take the narrower path downhill to the left, rather than sticking to the main path. This path will lead you downhill to a bridge, and the waterfall shortly beyond it.

    To return to Bolton Abbey, simply retrace your steps following the same route back.
