I don't recommend hiking this entire loop. I actually implore you to not hike Telephone Road.

Firstly, I think Telephone Road is off-limits to the public and therefore it would be trespassing to hike on it.

Secondly, Telephone Road, which is located on the east side of this loop, is not well-maintained and can be very steep along certain sections. I had to resort to sliding on all fours (even my butt sometimes) for non-insignificant lengths of this road. I did not find the experience pleasant. I am not confident that I could ascend said sections were I traveling uphill instead of down.

Thirdly, Telephone Road seemingly dead-ends. At the 8.2 mile marker I could discern no visible path to continue down the mountain-side. While satellite imagery and this website may show an unnamed trail branching off Telephone Road at the 7.3 mile marker whichs connects to Pipeline Road, I found that said trail becomes precipitously steep and thereby innavigable within a half-mile after branching off. I backtracked back to Telephone Road and continued north (downhill) to the 8.2 mile marker where the trail appears to cease. I resorted to bushwhacking down a shallow gully through moderately dense chapparral for a few minutes which fortunately brought me to Mendieman Ranch Road.

Mendieman Ranch Road is likely off-limits to the public. If you don't want to trespass you should head west along Pipeline Trail which should bring you back to the Coal Canyon entrance. Moreover, the section of Mendieman Ranch Road that is parallel to the 91 Freeway appears to be undergoing construction (atleast at the time of publishing this route). You will likely only want to navigate this road when there is no construction workers present such as on the weekend. To get back to the Santa Ana Biketrail, you will need to go through a tunnel beneath the 91 Freeway where there is an approximately 8-foot tall fence. You should anticipate having to clamber over the fence as it is unlikely to be unlocked. Fortunately there is no barbwire (atleast when I visited).

    CALCULATE CALORIES

    About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
