Brabants Kloosterpad 6RT: Hamont-Achel – Vessem
Langs én over de grens met België: met deze fietsroute reis je een stukje door het buitenland. Dat maakt het gebied waar je doorheen komt extra bijzonder. Hier is de sfeer anders dan in de rest van Brabant. Een beetje het gevoel zoals wanneer je op vakantie gaat.
Natuurpracht op de grens
Dat merk je onder andere in natuurgebied Malpie. Deze naam komt waarschijnlijk van het Franse ‘mal pays’: de Fransen vonden het ‘slecht land’ toen ze hier de Napoleonsweg aanlegden. Een andere nieuwsgierig makende naam is Cartierheide, genoemd naar een oude Waalse familie die hier grond kocht in 1863. Met al die natuurpracht en rust, snap je goed dat verschillende religieuze ordes zich hier vestigden. Zoals in de Abdij van Postel, een van de parels van Vlaanderen. Toen na de onafhankelijkheid van België in 1830 de grens werd bepaald, wilden de Belgen de abdij koste wat kost in hun land houden. Als je er bent, begrijp je meteen waarom.
Fiets of wandel het Brabants Kloosterpad
Noord-Brabant telt honderden kloostergebouwen, waarvan er ruim veertig nog worden bewoond. Diverse korte en langere routes voeren je mee door het rijke Brabantse kloosterleven van toen en nu langs vele kloosters en abdijen. Wandel bijvoorbeeld het Brabants Kloosterpad van ruim 330 km of fiets het Brabants Kloosterpad van ruim 700 km. Deze langeafstandsroutes zijn verdeeld in meerdere etappes. Liever een kortere route? Kies dan voor één van de fraaie rondwandelingen of fietsrondes. Brabant nodigt je uit om te verstillen en te verwonderen!
