Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.
When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.
Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.

This hike is really great. We only stopped for a day in Yosemite, but this route gave a great overview of all the park has to offer: spectacular waterfalls, looming peaks, awesome valleys, shady pine forests... Even in mid-August, the falls were still running, although not enough to make the famous mist!
The route is fairly strenuous, I’m in my mid-twenties and physically fit, and I had to stop a few times to catch my breath during the really steep bits. But hey, what is life without a little hard work? The climb is well worth it, just be prepared, don't forget to bring your trekking poles and wear decent hiking boots.
My main tip is: Wake. Up. Early. I read this same advice hundreds of times before I went and I can’t stress it enough! It’s the best way to beat the crowds. We hit the trailhead at 7:30 am and spent great stretches of the ascent with the path completely to ourselves. Yes, we passed a few other serious early-morning hikers and there were groups congregating at the best viewpoints but in general, it was very peaceful. Also, at that time the sun is still behind the hills meaning we did most of the difficult climbing in the cool shade of the morning.
On the way back, however, after descending alone on the John Muir trail, we were shocked when we re-joined the start of the route. It felt like a completely different trail...
What had been solitary and shady a few hours before was now baking hot and heaving with tourists. And not the nice, nature-respecting hikers we’d seen earlier, but the unprepared masses with their jeans and flip-flops. (Okay, that’s a little harsh. I’m sure there were many nice, nature-respecting hikers caught up in the melee, but the overall impression was one of badly-prepared urban folk who had come to take a nice selfie at the foot of the falls then catch the coach home) I can see how this would have spoiled the experience had we set off later.
Apart from this very last stretch, we had the rest of the trail to ourselves and had an amazing time! Well worth walking this trail, just do it early!
